’World is a Verb’: Just Transitions and Collective Care

27 February 2026 | 3 p.m. | via Zoom

Giovanna Di Chiro
Professor of Environmental Studies, Coordinator of the Environmental Justice & Community Resilience Program, Swarthmore College (Swarthmore, Pennsylvania)

The talk is part of the 21. Conference of the „Nachwuchsgruppe Umweltsoziologie

In this talk, Giovanna di Chiro discusses approaches to critical environmental and climate justice praxis that aim to build “otherwise worlds” through engaged campus-community collaborations.  She discusses her research and activism in alliance with US-based environmental justice organizers whose local and transnational activism challenges ongoing colonialism, labor and resource exploitation, and racial and gender oppression and violence.  She examines how this collaborative, cross-boundary work engages in resisting the world-as-it-is and imagining and attending to worlds-in-the-making.  In the context of the current national and world order, how do we imagine and develop university-community partnerships that fight ongoing assaults on marginalized communities‘ lives, and build collective power to enable transitions toward more just and liveable futures?
